Hey Melvin! I want to ask you a question...

Come on, you'll like this question.

Come on, you'll like this question.

What do you get when you cross a cat, a monkey and Dennis the Menace?

A Devon Rex!

You wouldn't have gotten it anyways, would you have?

Oh, well alright, then. Anyways, today is CATURDAY! And we're going to talk about the adorable pixie cats, the Devon Rex!
Known for their curly hair and adorable pixie-like features, these playful cats with giant ears are very unique. Described as the most "human-like" cats due to their expressive faces and almost uncanny timing when it comes to food. Don't believe me? Visit the very famous Daisy the Curly Cat who happens to be a cat of many faces as well as many fashionable hats.

The Devon emerged in the 1960s after a Miss Cox of Devonshire, England found that a stray cat that she had taken in had given birth to an alien-like kitten with silky, curly hair. She named the kitten Kirlee and he became the forefather for Devons everywhere. The breed has stayed similar in looks to Kirlee, possessing soft, short curly hair and striking features.

Devons were thought to be linked to the much older Cornish Rex, but test breedings found that the two are, in fact, different. Devons have very little guard hair, but still have curly awn and down hair. The Cornish only has curly down hair while the German Rex has a regular coat, but still shows the curliness throughought.

Devons are known for being trouble-makers. They are very active, playful, and must be the center of attention. They'll also try to squeeze into any space that they can fit into as well as get into any trouble that they can find. They are relatively easy to care for with their short coats and extremely loving and loyal to their human. They're always playful, and will playfully "nip" from time to time, much like a kitten.

Being a highly intelligent breed, they are easily trained to do things that you wouldn't even think to train your cat to do. Many Devon owners boast about their cat's ability to sit, heel, come, stay and even fetch certain items. These cats have a willingness to please like no other breed.

If you'd like a Devon of your own, make sure that you are ready for a ball of energy, a camera hog, and a diva. Before going to a breeder, try looking at some different rescue groups. Here are a few of many:
Devon Rex Rescue League
Cornish Rex Friends
Purebred Cat Rescue
Cat Purebred Rescue (I promise that this is a different one from the last one.
You could even look around on Petfinder, you'd be surprised at the amount of purebred animals that end up in shelters. And all rescue animals are thankful to any home that they go to.
If you want a kitten, make sure that you are buying from a reputable breeder. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Try to find a kitten that is local and visit the cattery yourself. Make sure that all the necessary health tests are done and your kitten is healthy. Don't be fooled by all the online breeders that only have pictures of the kittens. If you don't see the parents, then you are most likely looking at a kitten mill or a scam. Read up on finding and choosing a purebred breeder. If you do your homework, you'll save a lot of grief and a lot of money.
So, are you still mad at me, Melvin?

Alright, then. I guess I'd better get out the treats and make amends!

Wonderful information and GREAT PICTURES OF MELVIN!!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE the melvin pics and commentary! :p
Devons are beautiful and loving, but if you get one be prepared for huge vet dental bills. They have terrible teeth problems! But they are great cats and totally worth it.
